I know conservatives, conservatives are friends of mine…

June 9th, 2009

and you Lisa Raitt, are no conservative.

One of those great non-stories is Lisa Raitt saying the isotope scandal is sexy. Yes, we are talking about people’s lives. Yes it is insensitive. But does anybody believe every other politician doesn’t see issues this way, even if it dramatically affects peoples lives. Does anybody believe editors and reporters don’t look at stories this way, regardless of how much pain and suffering is involved in the story. Frankly, a little less hyperventilating from the latter would do wonders to decrease Canada’s hypocrisy emissions.

No, you want scandal that will stick, here it is:

This is an easy one. You know what solves this problem? Money. And if it’s just about money, we’ll figure it out. It’s not a moral issue.

And again

…it’s sexy,” says Ms. Raitt. “Radioactive leaks. Cancer.”

“Nuclear contamination,” says Ms. MacDonnell.

But it’s only about money,” says Ms. Raitt.

For a scandal that sticks, pocket book issues can’t be beat. And of course, this is an issue that would anger the Conservatives base voters.

Lisa Raitt's Money Ball

Lisa Raitt's Money Ball

The problem, of course, is that the other parties and the media, see nothing interesting in that quote. Of course  issues can be solved with money, that’s why it’s called moneyball, isn’t it? All the easier to throw it around with.

I, however, would like to see Conservative cabinet ministers view their job as something more than throwing my money at their problems. The country has a scandalous $50B deficit, cabinet ministers are caught on tape saying it’s just… money, it’s only… money, and everybody thinks the scandal is she has a mouth like an editor.

I wouldn’t kiss her with that mouth granted, but if your looking for a scandal, go with the money quote everytime.

Happy Tax Freedom Day Eve

June 5th, 2009

Tomorrow, June 6th, is tax freedom day in Canada according to The Fraser Institute. That means if you are at the office, or wherever you happen to work, today it is the last day you are working for the government – the rest of the year is yours. This is really just a simple way of demonstrating what 42% of your earnings looks like. And now, the Fraser Institute has a music video, an entertaining way of getting their message across.

In grand Bugs vs. Yosemite Sam fashion, I have been at war with my computer for a few weeks now. mint_tux_v2855Today I dropped some Acme dynamite in a carrot and the maroon fell for it. More specifically, I blew Windows right off my computer, and as of now, At Home in Hespeler is powered by Linux Mint.

I have been messing with Linux for a while now, and frustratingly kept hitting some problem or another, usually due to lack of disc space. But this week when my Vista completely crapped out, I rescued my data, and said the hell with it, I’m going with the penguin. While I have used Puppy Linux, and really, really liked it (if your looking for a bootable linux, or to revive an old laptop, this is your OS), I decided to try Mint. As of right now, I couldn’t be happier. I have full functionality, I’ve had no problems getting anything to work.

At Home in Hespeler: Penuin Powered like a real blog should be.

The Blue Blogging Soapbox Blogging Tories Site of the Week for the week of May 31st, 2009 is:

Pour un monde à droite (original)

Pour un monde à droite
(Google Translation)

Every once in a while I [Paul, from Blue Blogging Soapbox] visit various French blogs, but I haven’t made a habit of it. My high school French is long past rusty, but it’s one of the things I’ve had on my to do list for a while; to upgrade and improve my French. We’re lucky here in Windsor in that we have an excellent French college in the City that I can take immersion courses from. I’m looking forward to signing up in the fall and expanding my world somewhat.
