Ontario, We Hardly Knew Ye…

March 31st, 2014

“This is a premier who talks a big game about accountability… but she chose not to show up,” Howarth told reporters.

However, Howarth dodged questions on whether her party would support the Liberal budget…

This has been a regular feature of Ontario politics since the last election. Howarth supports Wynne on the only votes that count, then spends the rest of her time complaining about her politics or ethics.

And, oh yea, PC leader Tim Hudak will still be hard pressed to win any election that may or may not be coming. That is, to put it bluntly, a scathing indictment of Hudak and the party that simply doesn’t have the guts to put up a leader with a chance to win.

That said, Hudak deserves kudos for what he said this weekend, and it bears repeating since Wynne has threatened to sue him for saying it, thus letting us know she doesn’t want us hearing it, and Hudak has all the stones of a post-pubescent soprano in an all male choir and is likely to retract at any moment:

Now we know that since this happened during her time in the premier’s office that she oversaw and possibly ordered the destruction of government documents as part of the cover-up

As Kate over at SDA points out, our man Dalton is hiding at Harvard. Fortunatly, it turns out the internet revolution has,in fact, come to Harvard and they have email there now. She thinks emailing him there might be something worth doing, but I kind of think emailing Harvard themselves with your concern over their choice of Fellow and his ethics might have more bang for the buck.

Funny, listened to a chunk of John Tory’s show today, and this isn’t what he was talking about.

The economic disaster that is California is a powerhouse compared to Ontario

daltons-ontario

Both jurisdictions face deficits of about $16 billion… Ontario has approximately a third of California’s population and a third of it’s GDP…

Last word on this post to PC MPP Lisa McLeod: “He’s not been a responsible manager of our economy, and now we’re paying for it.”

daltons-ontarioWe’re all just really, really big children.

We’re just kind of growing up a little bit as Ontarians.

Thanks to Premier Cool Uncle (formerly Premier Dad), Dalton McGuinty, for having such confidence in us. Dad never did!

We’ve heard from Ontarians and they are ready for more freedom.

So, Chris Bentley, you can hear us. Hear this, both of you:

GET OUT OF MY LIFE, YOU SIMPERRING NINNIES!
YOU AREN”T SMART ENOUGH TO TELL ME HOW TO RUN MY LIFE,
and you sure aren’t cool enough to tell me when and were I can drink

daltons-ontario it’s like Fantino never left…

On Saturday there was a “Truth and Reconciliation Rally” in Caledonia Ontario,  in which the protesters, or bad guys in OPP parlance, were “repeatedly bumped and obstructed,” walking down the road. The OPP, which did arrest Gary McHale in 2007 for the aggressive action of raising a Canadian flag, did bubkus.

McHale did have a chance to speak to one of the six nations elders, but was drowned out by bussed in protesters.

Natasha at Moose & Squirrel has done great work on this.

And be sure to read Christie Blatchford’s compelling book on the Caledonia Crisis:

Update: from Natasha in the comments: o, no — All I’m doing is relaying the info Mark Vandermaas (Voice of Canada) has been kind enough to provide.

Quelle Surprise: Smart Meters Aren’t Saving Money

September 15th, 2010

Did anyone believe him? Anyone…? Beuller…?  Dalton McGuinty told you a) Smart Meters will save you money on electricity & b) They would be revenue neutral. Always revenue neutral with these guys, always that means there is the same amount of revenue as before, but they’ll have more of it.imgp7620

Here’s what I said about Smart Meters, as it related to a rate increase a Toronto Hydro because of successful conservation efforts:

…once everybody is doing their dishes in the middle of the night demand will increase at that time, causing the rate to increase in the middle of the night.

Of course, I was off a bit: Premier Dad didn’t wait until everybody was doing their dishes in the middle of the night. Smart Meters raised everybody’s electricity bill automatically, regardless of when you use electricity.

I’ve been paying HST all over town. I can’t wait for the election to vote against this guy.

Dalton McGuinty doesn’t seem to quite get, he’s got a real problem.

The question is, does Tim Hudak get that he’s got a real opportunity. Smart Meters are just the tip of the iceburg.

Is it just me, or is this starting to get tedious?

Ontario’s alcohol regulator has moved to ban an Austrian beer favoured by connoisseurs because its name, Samichlaus, means St. Nicholas in Swiss-German.

After all, we all know the kids are getting such a quality education that they know “Samichlaus” means St. Nicholas in Swiss-German.
Maybe if we privatized liquor sales the kids wouldn’t be getting access to all this liquor, then we wouldn’t need to ban it because it might scare them, or tempt them.

Pitbulls are dangerous, Michael Bryant is not.

Special prosecutor Richard Peck dropped criminal charges against former attorney general Michael Bryant this morning…

[Bryant] was charged in connection with a fatal crash last September that claimed the life of Darcy Allan Sheppard, 33, on Bloor St. W. near Avenue Rd.

…Toronto Police charged Bryant with criminal negligence causing death and dangerous operation of a motor vehicle causing death.

Remember kids, since Michael Bryant banned those dangerous pitbulls, Michael Bryant has killed more people in the Province of Ontario than pitbulls have.

daltons-ontarioIf I was to knock on 1,000 Ontario families‘ doors and ask them for their top three concerns, I’d be surprised if anybody said, `Well … one of those is we’ve got to start this new kind of mixed martial arts in Ontario. That’s going to mean a lot to me and my family,'” said McGuinty.

“It’s just not a priority for our families and it’s not a priority for me.”

But if you knocked on 1,000 Ontario families’ doors and ask them for their top three concerns, they apparently would say…

please ban Dan Aykroyd’s skull shaped vodka bottle.

See how this works, banning things is Dalton’s priority: allowing things is not your priority.

As Dalton himself said:

But if you knocked  on 1,000 Ontario families’ doors and ask them for their top three concerns, they apparently would say I want eight year olds to be taught about homosexuality, twelve year olds the magic of oral sex.

Or is this about Dalton’s sick, twisted priorities, not Ontario families?

Next up, flavoured condoms for high school?  Hey, they’re your priorities, people.

The last time I wrote an In Dalton McGuinty’s Ontario post, it was about Rahim Jaffer’s plea from impaired driving and possession of cocaine to careless driving. One commentator took me mildly, and fairly, to task:

What the fu- does this have to do with McGuinty? You are seriously reaching dude.

I thought hard before attaching that story to the “In Dalton McGuinty’s Ontario…” meme. I was not, as anon suggested, trying to tie the story directly to McGuinty. However, there is a culture in Ontario justice that I felt was at play here. It was Dalton’s Police force, lead by Dalton’s hand picked chief, that charged Jaffer. It was Dalton’s crown who decided there was no chance at conviction:

According to sources close to the case, police made two fateful decisions: repeatedly denying Jaffer access to his own lawyers and a strip search after he was pulled over on a rural road on Sept. 11 in the southern Ontario community of Palgrave, northwest of Toronto…

A so-called “blow test… came up positive.

[OPP officer Kim] Stapleton handcuffed the former rising star of the Conservative Party and placed him in her cruiser… she then went back to the Ford Escape and grabbed Jaffer’s sport jacket from the passenger seat.

She noticed a bag inside one of the pockets — what would later be determined to be about a gram of cocaine… for which possession is a federal crime…

He tried to contact two lawyers in Calgary, but couldn’t reach them and left a message…

Midway through the test, one of Jaffer’s Calgary lawyers called the detachment several times but was told he must wait because the breathalyzer was being administered… The second lawyer also returned Jaffer’s call in that time and was told it was too late… legal experts say he should have been given the opportunity to speak to counsel of his choice…

Shortly after the breathalyzer, police made another key decision: to strip search the former MP, an act [Toronto defence lawyer Scott] Cowan argues wasn’t “defensible at all” in the Jaffer case.

The Dalton’s Ontario tag is meant to catalogue issues that arise in Ontario, not necessarily that are a direct link to Dalton McGuinty, but which can, I think, be attributable to the culture which McGuinty is harvesting in Ontario. McGuinty wears this case because his police force screwed up, his crowns don’t have the guts/resources to try cases that hinge on a technicality (note the complete lack of suggestion that Jaffer was not a)drunk b)in possesion of the cocaine).

The truth is Jaffer got off because he had the phone number of two lawyers at his disposal. Anybody wealthy enough or who has worked in legal and political circles has an inherent advantage. And that’s not about to change as long as it is, Dalton McGuinty’s Ontario.

If daltons-ontarioGrandpa takes Grandma shopping and gets going more than 50KM over the speed limit, they take away his car and he faces fines in the thousands.

If an ex-MP gets drunk and has coke on his person, then hops in his car and drives 93 in a 50 zone, it’s a $500 fine for careless driving.

One wonders whether the table is now set for Michael Bryant’s “walking his dog without a leash,” plea bargain.

Correction. I originally stated Jaffer was found guilty of dangerous driving. It was actually careless driving.
